I have followed the journey of the electric Macan for a few years now. After years in the making, Porsche is finally putting the Macan EV on the roads.
I should say: technically, Porsche calls this the Macan Electric rather than the Macan EV. Whatever you call it, it’s an incredible bit of kit.
When will the Porsche Macan Electric be available?
Porsche is busy hammering out the Macan Electric for a release in the fourth-quarter of 2024 – between October and December. Following its unveiling in Singapore, production was ramped up at Porsche’s Leipzig plant, where the Macan EV will be manufactured with a focus on sustainability, including carbon-neutral production.
How much will the Porsche Macan Electric cost?
There are two models set to go on sale in late-2024:
- Porsche Macan 4 Electric: $133,700 AUD (plus on-roads)
- Porsche Macan Turbo Electric: $180,100 AUD (plus on-roads)
The line-up
Porsche is launching the new Macan EV with two models in the range: the Macan 4 and the Macan Turbo.
Both bring the power and style Porsche has built its reputation on for almost 100 years now, only this time with an electric twist.
Porsche Macan 4 Electric
The Macan 4 is designed for a balance of luxury, efficiency and range with a distinct Porsche performance flair.
You get 300kW of power which will move you from a standing start to 100km/h in a little over five seconds. That’s a second quicker 0-100km/h time than the petrol-powered Macan T (with launch control) from last year, despite the weight of all those batteries.
The Macan 4 also offers advanced all-wheel-drive capabilities, powered by dual electric motors on each axle, allowing it to handle various driving conditions comfortably, including light off-road terrain. I’m not sure I’d go serious off-roading in my Porsche but there are many on Instagram who disagree with me.
Porsche Macan Turbo Electric
The Macan Turbo steps it up with a more powerful array of motors, designed for those who want their head pressed into the headrest when they put their foot down.
Producing up to 470 kW and delivering 1130 Nm of torque (read: lots), the Macan Turbo EV model will take you from 0 to 100 km/h in a wild 3.3 seconds. That’s not only twice as quick as last year’s petrol-powered Macan T, but it’s even faster than the 2023 Porsche 911 Carrera GTS.
The Macan Turbo also brings advanced handling features like rear-axle steering (standard on the Turbo, optional on the Macan 4), which improves manoeuvrability in city driving and enhances stability at high speeds. With Porsche’s high-performance all-wheel-drive system and air suspension (standard on the Turbo), the driving experience is smoother, more responsive, and much closer to a sports car feel than the Macan 4. This model is aimed at Porsche enthusiasts who value power and speed and want their SUV to feel capable of high-speed sprints and cornering agility on par with Porsche’s sports cars.
What is the range of the Porsche Macan Electric?
The most annoying thing about electric cars is range anxiety. The fear that you’ll run out of juice in the middle of nowhere, turning your fancy EV into a four-wheeled brick. That’s not something you’ll have to fear in the Macan Electric in any spec.
The Macan 4 Electric’s maximum range is quoted at 613 km (under the WLTP battery test). That’s a big number, putting it ahead of even the Tesla Model X SUV, for example. To put that in context, you’ll make it from Sydney to Byron Bay and only have to stop once to top up the battery. Alternatively, for our southern friends, it’s a little over eight round trips from the Melbourne CBD to the Mornington Peninsula.
The faster Macan Turbo EV has a slightly shorter range at around 591 km due to its increased power, but that’s still no slouch.
Porsche has loaded the Macan EV models with a 100kW/h battery, with 95kW/h of usable power. And it’s all designed to recharge quickly when you plug it in. Provided you have the right charger of course.
The Macan EV uses Porsche’s 800-volt architecture, which enables quicker rejuicing at fast-chargers. At a compatible 800-volt station, drivers can go from 10% to 80% battery in about 21 minutes. For added convenience, Porsche has also optimised the Macan EV for standard 400-volt charging stations, which can provide up to 135 kW of power. That way you can squeeze more range out when highway driving or running the kids back and forth on the weekend.
The motors
Both Macan EV models utilise dual motors, one on each axle, allowing for clever all-wheel drive that adapts to road conditions. Porsche has also equipped its advanced Traction Management system to optimise how the power hits the road in real time to make sure the drive is as safe around corners as it is sporty.
It’s all the lessons Porsche has learned from building the Taycan EV, evolved for the SUV format.
The interior
Inside, the Macan EV is as luxuriously appointed as you would expect from a car bearing the Porsche badge. The cabin is sleek and driver-centric, with Porsche’s latest display gear taking centre stage. The digital driver display spans a whopping 12.6 inches. In the centre, meanwhile, there’s another massive 10.9-inch touchscreen, featuring Porsche’s Communication Management (PCM) system. That’s your navigation, media, and vehicle settings screen.
And if that isn’t enough screen for you, there’s the option to spec up for an additional 10.9 inch display for the front-passenger. With it, they get control of the entertainment system and the navigation settings without having to reach into the driver’s eyeliner.
You can view all of this opulence from the comfort of your 18-way adjustable electric sports seats, too. They’re even installed to put you lower down in the car for a better connection with the road.
There’s even wireless support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The design and the drive
True to Porsche’s design mission, the Macan EV is a blend of luxury design and performance. You get a lowered, coupe-inspired silhouette, strong contours, topped off with Porsche’s distinct “flyline” at the rear.
The Macan EV has also been designed with a low centre of gravity and shorter overhangs to make it feel much sportier. Typically, fast SUVs have felt too top-heavy, and throwing you around into and out of the corners. Instead, Porsche made it lower and even installed the interior seats lower down. That way you feel more connected to the road.
And the tech doesn’t stop, either. Porsche’s Active Suspension Management (PASM) adjusts the damping based on driving conditions. That way you can focus on getting the drive you want rather than clicking a bunch of buttons. There’s also air suspension that can be adjusted quickly and easily to allow for highway cruising or twisty backroad blasts

What would an electric Porsche look great with in the garage? A luxury Porsche-inspired coffee machine from La Marzocco, naturally. I took a look at one of the new machines recently and it is truly spectacular.
