Omega’s first Speedmaster in space is getting a modern re-release
Space travel is all about precision. So when NASA needed a watch for its astronauts to wear on the final frontier, it picked the Omega Speedmaster.
Now the so-called “First Omega In Space” is getting a modern reboot. Here’s everything you need to know from someone who’s in the know: me! I actually own a Speedmaster, and can tell you why it’s steeped in such rich lore.
It’s watches that make Luke Hopewell tick. He’s been a watch writer for five years and a tech writer for 10 before that. Got a question for the author? Email me.
What is it?
It’s a version of the iconic Speedmaster dubbed “The First Omega in Space”. The reboot here blends the rich heritage of the Speedy with new innovations Omega has come up with in recent years.
To look at, it’s almost exactly the same design as the original CK 2998 from 1959 that astronaut Wally Schirra wore during the 1962 Mercury Sigma 7 mission.
The case is just shy of 40mm, features a black aluminium bezel with the iconic tachymeter scale, and even features the famous “dot over ninety” (or DoN) that real Omega-heads look for on different versions of the Speedmaster.
The dial is a gorgeous deep blue that hasn’t been seen in recent Speedmaster models, and the hands themselves are more reminiscent of a Seamaster than a Speedy. The hesalite plastic of the 60’s has been replaced by Omega’s sapphire crystal which I’ve found to be super scratch-resistant while wearing my Speedmaster almost daily.
Under the hood there’s the new manual movement (known as the 3861) which bests the original CK 2998 with new features like magnetic resistance and certification as a precision timepiece by METAS – the last word in watch testers.
On the reverse, there’s the Omega Seahorse Medallion on the caseback. Plus, you get the date of the first Sigma 7 mission and the words “The First Omega In Space”. Neat!
Collectors will appreciate the choice of a black or brown leather strap or the option of a full metal bracelet with OMEGA’s comfort release system. Each model comes housed in a special presentation box, accompanied by a commemorative Moonwatch leaflet.
Pricing and release date
Omega says the watch is available for purchase right now, but there’s already a waiting list which means the nerds have been quick to sell out the launch stock.
It retails for AU$12,500 on either a brown or black leather strap. If you want stainless steel, there’s a model for you at AU$13,075.
