When will the Omega x Swatch MoonSwatch be available online?

It’s the number one question on the lips of hype watch lovers all over the world. When will the MoonSwatch be available online? According to a new release from Swatch, it’s bad news.

If it ticks, Luke Hopewell has worn it. A watch expert with years of experience, Luke is the guy in the know when it comes to what to wear when and for whom. His favourite watch is the Omega Speedmaster Professional, but he’s also partial to anything with a crown…

After to-ing and fro-ing about whether or not the Moonswatch would be available for sale online, Swatch has finally bowed to the masses and put only a select few models in its online store. Here’s what you need to know.

What is the Moonswatch?

2022 saw the Moonswatch break cover onto the scene, and it was met with enormous hype. 2022’s hottest watch appeared on the wrists of celebs like Ed Sheeran and even James Bond himself, Daniel Craig. And it’s no wonder: it takes the brilliant Omega Speedmaster Professional and makes it accessible to everyone.

It’s made from Swatch’s unique blend of polymer and ceramic and sold under the “bioceramic” label. Initially there were 11 Moonswatch models, each representing “missions” to the different planets in our solar system. I see you doing the math on your fingers: Swatch also included the Mission to Earth, Mission to Moonswatch (Earth’s Moon) and Mission to the Sun in the range. Hence, 11 models.

It’s a playful interpretation of Omega’s classic watch-of-record: the Speedmaster Professional, also known as the “Moonwatch”. It features the asymmetrical case, tachymeter bezel and each mission is decked out in a fun and unique colourway to evoke the celestial body it’s named for.

The sapphire crystal is swapped out for plexiglass, making it even more authentic for space nerds. Purists will always prefer a Hesalite Speedmaster over the glass model, as it’s the same as the ones used by NASA.

There’s a quartz chronograph movement under the dial and it’s super-light thanks to the use of bioceramic for the case instead of the Speedmaster’s metal construction. The stock bands are made from a range of materials – some plastic, some nylon, and so on.

The Moonswatch range had only been available from Swatch boutiques, meaning that some buyers missed out on the first wave of hype. Now, however, Swatch has some models available online.

Can you buy the Moonswatch online?

Swatch had originally told me back in 2022 and again in 2023 that the Moonswatch wouldn’t be available to purchase online. Instead, Swatch would focus on making it available at boutiques.

But now that it can catch up with demand (seriously, people were queueing around the block for this thing), Swatch has decided to put a total of four Moonswatch models up for sale on its store.

There are four Moonswatch models you can buy online right now:

These four have to be the most popular Moonswatch models in the original range. The Mission to the Moon is the closest you can get to an Omega Speedmaster dupe, and the Mission to Mars is a great homage for Omega’s Speedmaster Alaska Project watches.

The models all cost the same – $435 AUD – and will ship in good time from Swatch’s online store to your doorstep.

Can you buy special edition Moonswatch models online?

Swatch has expanded the Moonswatch range to feature a number of special edition models, each celebrating different themes. 2024 saw an additional 11 Moonswatches added to the range, for example, each centred on different celestial events.

There’s also the Mission to Moonphase, which features (obviously) a Moonphase complication and the character of Snoopy. There’s also a three-watch collection which explores elements on Earth including Lava, Desert and Polar Lights.

Sadly, none of these will be available online. They’ll only be available – in limited quantities – in boutiques. Some may already be sold out, so you’ll have to hit the aftermarket in search of them.
